Tether Privacy Policy
Tether: Voice Journal & Diary, by MKR Apps · Last updated 11 October 2026
Tether is a journal you talk or type into. It keeps your entries private to your account and, if you choose, uses AI to organise them into threads, to-dos and answers. This policy explains what we collect, why, who processes it and how to delete it.
What we collect
- Account details from Google sign-in: your name, email address and profile picture, and a Google account identifier.
- Your entries: the text you type or dictate, and voice recordings you choose to save, with the time and time zone of each entry.
- What Tether builds from them: threads, to-dos, reminders, amounts, people's names you mention, summaries and the questions you ask Tether.
- Usage counts needed to apply monthly limits (for example, how many entries were processed). We do not use advertising or analytics SDKs and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
How we use it
Only to provide Tether to you: to store and sync your journal, transcribe your voice, organise entries, answer your questions and send reminders you set. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with anyone except the service providers below, who process it on our behalf.
AI organising
Organising your entries with AI is how Tether works, so it is on when you start, and Tether tells you so before your first entry. Your entry text is sent to the AI providers below to find threads, to-dos and amounts, and to answer your questions.
You can turn AI organising off at any time in the app (Account, then All entries and privacy). Tether then works as a private diary: entries are stored on your phone and in your account only, and are not sent to AI providers.
Service providers
| Provider | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Your account and all journal data, including saved voice recordings | Secure database, storage and sign-in |
| Sign-in request | Google sign-in | |
| Deepgram | Voice audio while you record or when you ask for a transcript | Speech-to-text (we opt out of Deepgram using it for model improvement) |
| OpenAI | Entry text and your questions (AI organising only) | Organising entries, summaries, answers and search |
| Google Gemini / OpenRouter | Entry text (AI organising only, as a backup when OpenAI is unavailable) | Organising entries |
| TypeSafe | Short descriptions of entries and existing threads (AI organising only) | Matching an entry to the right thread |
These providers process data under their API terms, which do not allow them to use it to train their models. Data may be processed outside your country, including in the United States.
On your phone
Tether keeps a copy of your journal on your phone so it works offline. Your sign-in session is stored in encrypted storage. Dictation may use your phone's own speech recognition. The microphone is used only while you record.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest by our providers. Each account can access only its own data.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while you have an account. Deleting an entry in the app deletes it and its voice recording from our servers. You can delete your whole account in the app: open Tether, tap the account icon on Today, then Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, entries, recordings and everything built from them, on our servers and on that phone. If you no longer have the app, see Delete your Tether account. AI providers may keep request data for a short period (up to 30 days) for abuse monitoring before deleting it.
Children
Tether is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export or delete your data. Most of this is in the app; for anything else, email us.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
